Orchestral Fireworks in the Park

Picnics – Music – Fireworks

In May 2016 we started celebrating our 125th year with a bang (or two!), teaming up with Huddersfield Golf Club, which was also founded in 1891, to present an outdoor concert in Fixby Park.

The audience were invited to bring gazebos, seats, picnics etc, and the weather didn’t let us down. Pre-concert entertainment was provided by a local jazz band, Sundown Swing, and fireworks rounded the evening off.

The first half of the programme kicked off with the rousing Festive Overture by Shostakovich and included works by Haydn Wood, Walton, Bernstein and Mascagni, as well as a couple of arias sung by our great friend Catrine Kirkman, who had appeared with us previously in Carmena Birana and La Boheme.

The second half comprised the traditional favourites for such an event – Jerusalem, Rule Britannia, Sea Songs, and ended with the 1812 Overture with fantastic cannons provided by the pyrotechnicians and fired at the right time by Catrine. This led onto a truly spectacular firework display.

All profits were donated to the Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice.
